Description of the genus

Annual or perennial herbs. Stems sometimes winged. Leaves alternate. Inflorescence a panicle or with solitary capitula on the branch ends. Phyllaries 3-7-rowed, often acuminate or aristate at apex and glandular outside. Capitula heterogamous with bisexual disk-florets and marginal filiform female florets which lack ligules. Receptacular scales 0. Pappus of 5-15 delicate minutely barbellate bristles in all the florets.

Worldwide: 7 species from south-western tropical Africa
