Shrubs or small trees, or sometimes pyrophytic subshrubs, unarmed; stems often lenticellate. Leaves mostly restricted to new growth, paired or rarely ternate, petiolate; blades typically glaucous beneath; domatia present as tufts of hair, or absent; stipules sheathing at the base. Inflorescence in pedunculate cymes, usually at nodes from which the leaves have fallen, except in pyrophytic species Flowers (4)5(6)-merous; bracteoles small; calyx limb lobed above; corolla drying wrinkled; tube cylindric, subequal to the lobes or occasionally much longer, lobes reflexed, rounded or obtuse, thickened towards the apex. Fruit a 2-seeded drupe, large, subglobose, laterally compressed. Pyrenes thickly woody, broadly ellipsoid; seeds with endosperm entire. Worldwide: 11 species in tropical Africa Zambia: 5 taxa. |
