Description of the genus

Suffrutex, shrubs or small trees. Leaves opposite, sometimes with domatia. Inflorescence of cymes. Flowers bisexual, 4-6-merous. Calyx lobes large, leaf-like, equal, erect. Corolla tube relatively long; lobes long and pointed. Stigma 2-lobed. Ovary 2-locular. Fruit subspherical, often ribbed.

Derivation of name: from Greek: leptos meaning slender or weak, aktis, a ray, referring to the corolla lobes.

Worldwide: 25 species in tropical and South Africa.

Zambia: 3 taxa.
