Description of the genus

Coarse erect rough perennial herbs. Leaves opposite, sessile or subsessile. Flowers solitary in axils of terminal leaves or bracts. Calyx 5-lobed, becoming inflated in fruit. Corolla 5-lobed; lobes widely spreading. Stamens 4, didynamous; anthers 2-thecal. Fruit a capsule.

Worldwide: 5 species in tropical and South Africa and America

Zambia: 1 taxon.
