Perennial herbs. Leaves alternate, sometimes the lower opposite, sometimes appearing fasciculate. Flowers sessile in spikes. Bracts present, longer than calyx. Calyx spathaceous, membranous or hyaline. Corolla tube slender, divided ± to base, with a large 4 (-5)-lobed limb. Stamens 4, didynamous, inserted on limb. Ovary 2-locular; style entire. Capsule ± ovoid. Worldwide: 25 species in South Africa and the tropics. Zambia: 3 taxa. |
