Description of the genus

Subshrubby perennial. Leaves entire, petiolate. Flowers in congested clusters. Calyx campanulate, 5-toothed, unwinged, accrescent and enclosing the fruit. Corolla narrowly campanulate with 5 lobes. Ovary 2-locular. Fruit a berry.

Derivation of name: after Henry Witham, an English palaeobotanist of the early 19th century.

Worldwide: c.10 species, occurring in the Old World
