Description of the genus

Annual or perennial herbs. Stems (in ours) erect, arising from a basal rosette. Leaves alternate, entire. Flowers in racemes or corymbs; pedicels geniculate, with bract inserted at or near the middle. Calyx and corolla 5-lobed. Stamens alternating with staminodes. Ovary semi-inferior

Worldwide: 15 species, cosmopolitan, often in salt marshes
