Annual or perennial herbs. Leaves all in radical rosettes (in ours), without stipules. Inflorescence a spike, terminating a scape (in ours). Flowers small, inconspicuous, subtended by a bract, usually 4-merous, sessile. Corolla gamopetalous, scarious, 3-4 lobed. Ovary superior. Fruit a capsule. Worldwide: 3 genera and 275 species, cosmopolitan Zambia: 8 genera and 18 taxa. |
