Description of the genus

Perennials. Inflorescence a panicle with an elongated central axis and whorled branches; rhachis internodes and pedicels slender, filiform. Spikelets in pairs, markedly different from each other: sessile spikelet laterally flattened; glumes subequal, awned or awnless; lower glume often minutely spiny on the keels and muricate or mammilate on the back; upper lemma entire or 2-lobed. Pedicellate spikelet male or neuter.

Worldwide: 26 species in warm regions, especially Old World.
