Trees or shrubs. Leaves opposite, digitate with 3-9 leaflets. Indumentum of lepidote scales. Inflorescence dichotomously branched. Calyx spathaceous, sometimes irregularly 2- to 3-lipped. Corolla tubular-infundibuliform or tubular-campanulate, showy, white to red with a yellow throat (never wholly yellow in our species), slightly 2-lipped. Stamens 4. Fruit a lepidote linear-cylindric capsule. Seeds winged. Derivation of name: from a Brazilian name. Worldwide: c. 74 species in tropical America. Zambia: 1 cultivated taxon. |
