Description of the genus

Annuals. Flowers solitary or in 1-sided racemes, blue or violet, rarely white. Calyx 5-toothed. Corolla with long straight slender tube and 5-lobed ± zygomorphic limb. Stamens 4, didynamous; anthers of shorter pair with 1 cell undeveloped; fifth rudimentary stamen sometimes present. Capsule with 2-lobed valves.

Derivation of name: Named for John Browallius, 1707-55, botanist and Bishop of Abo, Sweden.

Worldwide: 2 species in tropical America

Zambia: 1 cultivated taxon.
