Description:
Perennial suffrutex with herbaceous, probably annual, erect, unbranched or rarely 1-branched stems 45–75 cm high; stems appressed-pubescent with grey or silvery hairs; leaves pinnate with (1)2–4(5) pairs of leaflets; petiole (1.3)1.8–4.2 cm long, petiole and rachis together (2)4.5–11.2 cm long, pubescent like the stem; leaflets (3.5)4.5–8(9) × (0.6)1–2 cm, narrowly elliptic to oblanceolate, ± cuneate at the base, obtuse to rounded at the apex, veins prominent and conspicuous on both surfaces; upper surface glabrous, lower surface thinly appressed-pubescent, stipules (5)8–13 × (1)1.5–2 mm, linear to linear-triangular; flowers in dense terminal racemes 2–10 cm long with usually also flowers in the axils of 1–3(4) upper leaves, occasionally with 1–2 short axillary racemes, terminal racemes usually exceeded by the upper leaves, bracts quickly falling; pedicels 4–10 mm long; calyx 9–12 mm long, densely appressed-pubescent with grey hairs, lateral teeth about equalling the tube, lower tooth distinctly longer, the two upper teeth joined for most of their length; petals (18)20–24 mm long, orange to yellow; ovary pubescent, style glabrous or pubescent, with pencillate tip; pods 70–100 × 8–10 mm, shortly appressed-pubescent to tomentulose; seeds 6–9.
Subsp. hockii differs in having a glabrous style and pods 100 x 8 mm.

Derivation of specific name: hockii: after A. Hock, who collected the type specimen in Katanga (DRC) in 1911.
