Description:
Prostrate to spreading rosette forming or tufted perennial herb 10-30 cm tall or occasionally a subshrub to 50 cm. Stems usually many, from a crown of a thick woody rootstock, trailing, ribbed, terete, angular or compressed, greenish to red or brown, with biramous hairs and sparsely to densely covered with gland tipped yellowish or red multicellular hairs, plant usually viscid. Stipules 1-5 mm long, lanceolate-attenuate or subulate, ascending, spreading or reflexed. Leaves pinnately 3-7-foliolate, basal leaves reduced and scale-like; leaf axis (1.5)3-15(20) mm long including petiole of 0.5-6 mm; terminal leaflet 4-15(25) x 1-6.5 mm, usually slightly smaller than laterals, oblanceolate, narrowly elliptic to obovate, 2-5 times as long as wide, strongly apiculate, sparsely to densely hairy on both surfaces, margins frequently with gland tipped hairs. Raceme (1.5)2-5(7) cm long, rhachis often zig-zag, laxly (4)6-20(25)-flowered, plants flower less prolifically in second year of growth if escaped burning. Calyx (2)3-4 mm long, densely strigose to subsericeous and sparsely to densely covered with gland-tipped multicellular hairs, lobes narrowly triangular, lanceolate or subulate, 3-5 times tube length. Corolla 6-8 mm long, pink to carmine-red; back of standard and distal keel margin spreading pubescent-strigose to subsericeous; ovary densely grey pubescent-strigose. Pod 7-18(24) x 1.5-2 mm, apparently setting infrequently, straight, cylindrical, spreading, densely strigose and with gland-tipped hairs. Seeds 3-8, 1.2-1.8 x 1-1.2 mm, quadrangular-cylindrical to globose, khaki, yellow, orange or brown, sometimes purple-mottled, not pitted.
