Description:
Subshrub or shrub, (0.6)1–2.4(6) m tall with erect flowering stems from a thick woody rootstock; stems glabrous to covered with tubercular-based hairs; Leaves 8–20(32)-foliolate; leaflets 4–25 × 2–13 mm, rounded, oblong or obovate-oblong, sometimes ciliate and often with translucent marginal glands, entire or crenulate, glabrous; petiole and rhachis together 1–6 cm long, with indumentum like the stems; inflorescences axillary or terminal, ample, racemose or paniculate; calyx glabrous to pubescent, 2-lipped; lips 5–9 × 2–4.5 mm, oblong, often ciliolate-serrulate; standard yellow or brownish, 10–15 × 6–10 mm, oblong, obovate or elliptic, emarginate, glabrous, wings yellow, keel petals yellow, longer than the standard; fruit of 1, rarely 2 articles, 14–25 × 8–14 mm, each ± elliptic, flat and papery, glabrous; seeds pale brown, 6 × 4.5 × 1.5 mm, obliquely elliptic-reniform, very compressed.
Var. baumii differs in having smaller, scarcely crenulate leaflets typically c. 10 x 3-4 mm, while var. kassneri has larger distinctly crenulate leaflets up to 25 x 13 mm.

Derivation of specific name: baumii : after Hugo Baum (1866-1950), German botanist and horticulturalist who participated in expeditions along the Cunene and Zambezi rivers where he made many collections.
Habitat: Miombo and Chipya woodland, short grassland, dambos and scrub usually on sandy soil or occasionally on rocky slopes
Altitude range: 1500 - 1800 m

Worldwide distribution: Nigeria, Cameroon and Central African Republic through DRC Burundi, Rwanda and Tanzania to Zambia and Angola
