Description:
Erect to procumbent annual, perennial or shrubby herb. Stems up to 1.25 m tall. Leaves glabrous to sparsely pilose, scabrid above, with the larger pair in a whorl more than 5 times as long as the smaller pair. Leaf lamina of larger pair lanceolate to narrowly ovate or elliptic; margin toothed; lamina of smaller pair rhombic-triangular in outline, sharply toothed. Flowers arranged in capitate or elongated heads. Outer bracts with strong submarginal veins, narrowly ovate-elliptic. Corolla pale or bright blue or bluish purple, 17-54 mm long; limb obovate, distinctly 3-lobed. Anther appendage 1-7 mm long. Capsule 10-13 mm long.

Habitat: In a wide variety of habitats, including grassland on black clay, riverine woodland, miombo woodland, rocky outcrops, lake shores, roadsides and also as a weed in villages and towns.
Altitude range: 600 - 2150 m
