Description:
Shrub or tree up to 6 m high, with smooth grey bark; branches, purplish- or yellow-brown, hairless or sometimes papillose-puberulous when young, lenticellate. Leaves oblanceolate or rarely elliptic or obovate-oblanceolate, 4·5–9 cm long, lateral veins widely spreading, reticulate veining prominent above; margin densely spinulose-serrulate or curved-serrulate; petiole 1·5–2 mm long, rather slender, grooved above. Flowers 5–10 in a more or less elongated raceme, 9–20 mm long; pedicels 1·4–2·6 cm long in fruit, articulated in the lower c. 1–5 mm from the base. Sepals 5–7 mm long in flower, elliptic, rounded, becoming scarlet and 7–9 mm long in fruit. Petals pale yellow, obovate, c. 8–10 mm long, narrowing to a short claw. Drupelets ovoid-cylindric, 6–8 mm long.

Derivation of specific name: afzelioides: resembling Ochna afzelii, a closely related species.
Habitat: In deciduous woodland and along margins of evergreen forest.
Altitude range: 1200 - 1650 m

Worldwide distribution: Katanga DRC, western Tanganyika, Zambia and northwestern Zimbabwe.
