Description:
Perennial climber. Leaves 3-foliolate; leaflets rhombic-ovate with straight or slightly concave sides. Flowers in axillary inflorescences, mauve to purple with various amounts of white. Pods flat with a verrucose margin.
Type location:
Kenya
Notes: The species originates from Africa but now widely cultivated for its edible beans.

Habitat: In a wide variety of habitats, but often in wet or riverine habitats
Altitude range: Up to 2100 m
Flowering time:Aug - Mar
Worldwide distribution: Widespread in tropical Africa extending to the Cape and Madagascar
