Description:
Perennial, up to 60 cm tall, without stolons, but with short creeping rhizomes, woody, scaly, forming new plants at regular intervals. Involucral bracts 3-4. Inflorescence simple, with spikelets inserted on main branches. Glumes brown rarely green. Spikelets usually less than 30 mm long, falling off in their entirety when mature.

Notes: Spot characters: “Easy to recognize by its lax-flowered spikelets and few, often reflexed, spikelets per spike.” (FTEA)
Derivation of specific name: turrillii – for William Bertram Turrill, 1890-1961
Habitat: Brachystegia and Kalahari woodland on sand.
Altitude range: 800 - 1000 m
