Location (short): ca. 57 km NW of Chingola along Kafue River.

Location (detailed): Just west of the Copperbelt, Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage is a large private farm on the banks of the Kafue river.

Description

At its heart is a long-established chimpanzee sanctuary which has received considerable attention from the international media. Chimpanzees are not indigenous to Zambia and most of the animals have either been confiscated from illegal traders or bred on site. At present they are kept in a variety of enclosures, the biggest of which encompasses 1000ha of woodland. Additionally, 5300ha is being fenced to establish a game ranch and cattle are farmed on the remaining land.
