Description of the genus

Perennial herbs with annual stems arising from a spherical tuber buried several cm. deep in the soil. Stems solitary, erect. Leaves cauline, many, spirally arranged, with the lower surface sometimes scabrid or armed with hooked prickles. Flowers solitary in the leaf axils; tepals 6, blue or occasionally white.

Comment: The key to the two Zambian species: Anthers yellow with blue or purple tips - nutans. Anthers blue with yellow tips and base - mackenziei(FZ)

Worldwide: Three species, one along the SW coast of South Africa.

Zambia: 2 taxa.
