Description of the genus

Annual or (in ours)perennial herbs, aquatic. Inflorescence a terminal spikelet or a terminal or lateral head of few-many spikelets. Each spikelet composed of few glumes, each subtending a bisexual flower; each flower with 1 ovary, 1 style and 2-3 long stigmas and 1-3 stamens; perianth segments 0. Nutlet usually ellipsoid to obovoid, longitudinally ribbed with transverse bars between the ribs, papillose or smooth.
