2539.000 Delphinium L. - Larkspurs

Description of the genus

Annual or perennial herbs. Leaves basal and cauline, palmately lobed. Flowers zygomorphic, bisexual, arranged in terminal racemes or panicles. Sepals 5, ± petaloid, the dorsal sepal spurred. Petals 2-5, the posterior 2 with spurs joined and fitting into the calyx-spur. Stamens many, the filaments often flattened. Fruit of 3 pubescent follicles.

The genus Delphinium has the only zygomorphic flowers in Ranunculaceae in the FZ area.

Worldwide: c. 320 species, in N temperate regions and on tropical African mountains.

Zambia: 2 taxa.
