Description of the genus

Annuals or perennials. Ligule shortly membranous; leaf laminas flat. Inflorescence a single axillary raceme; racemes cylindric or slightly dorsally compressed; internodes thickened, clavate, fused to the adjacent pedicel. Sessile spikelet ± embedded in the internode; callus truncate; inferior glume crustaceous, broadly convex; inferior floret reduced to a hyaline lemma. Caryopsis ellipsoid, dorsally flattened.

Worldwide: Four species in Africa Indo-China and Philippines.

Zambia: 1 taxon.
