Sphaerocyperus Lye

Description of the genus

Perennial herb with stout rhizomes giving off tough horizontal stolons. Culms scapose, bulbous at the base. Lower leaves reduced to sheaths. Involucral bracts leaf-like. Inflorescence a pale globose cluster of congested spikelets. Spikelets lanceolate, laterally flattened. Nutlets elongate.

Worldwide: One species from southern Tanzania to Angola.
